Stephanie J. Bond is a survivor. After experiencing personal heartbreak of unfathomable proportions, she has dedicated her life to helping others transcend through their own personal tragedy.

Stephanie’s husband struggled with mental illness throughout the last several years of their marriage. As his illness escalated, violence and abuse gradually crept into their home. In 2010, her marriage ended with an attempted murder and his suicide. Stephanie was shot three times and suffered life-threatening injuries. Her family was broken. Her community was divided. She lost her multi-million dollar business, leaving her with few financial resources to raise four children.

Stephanie is proof that even with financial stability and other privileges, domestic violence and mental illness can still destroy everything. Through all of this, she refuses to be typecast as a victim. Brittany Hanks, also known as the Blue Ninja, was a competitor on season 8 of the hit TV show, American Ninja Warrior. She was one of the few selected from thousands of applicants because of her elite level athleticism combined with her inspiring life story. 

Brittany has been a life long athlete competing in soccer, softball, basketball, track, volleyball, gymnastics and cheerleading. 

She’s faced many adversities in life including dealing with the passing away of family members, turbulent moves at an early age and even injuries that could have ended her fitness career. 

Despite these challenges, Brittany says, “I don’t see anything as an accident. Everything happens for a reason.”

Dr. Adrian James Tan, is the co-author of Million Dollar Muscle, a book that offers a sociological perspective on the fitness industry, discussing how it is driven both by market forces and the culture of individual consumerism.

Dr. Adrian James Tan, a Singapore-born American, is currently a lecturer at the University of North Texas and was a long time faculty member at Southern Methodist University in the Sociology Department. He teaches courses in Introduction to Sociology, Marriage and Family, Sociological Theory, and Person vs. Society. Adrian obtained a bachelor's degree majoring in English and philosophy, and master's degrees in sociology and international affairs at Ohio University. Specializing in social psychology and ethnic identity, Adrian earned a Ph.D. in sociology at the University of North Texas, submitting his dissertation on the ethnic identity of Mexican-American children.

Born and raised in France, Patrick earned an MBA in Finance and Marketing from the École Supérieure du Commerce de Paris and joined the international marketing firm of Young & Rubicam.
